Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback Quick Facts

  • Evidence-based treatment: In November 2012, biofeedback was classified as a Level 1 (“best support”) treatment option—equivalent to medication—for children with attention and hyperactivity disorders.

  • Proven effectiveness: A meta-analysis by Arns et al. (2009) concluded that neurofeedback for ADHD is “Efficacious and Specific” (Level 5), showing a large effect size for improving inattention and impulsivity, and a medium effect size for reducing hyperactivity.

  • Global practice: Today, thousands of board-certified neurofeedback practitioners offer treatment worldwide.

What Is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback or neurotherapy, is a specialized form of biofeedback that trains the brain to regulate its own activity. During neurofeedback sessions, individuals receive real-time information about their brain’s electrical activity (EEG) and learn to increase or decrease specific brainwave patterns. This process takes advantage of the brain’s natural ability to change—its neuroplasticity—to promote healthier brainwave functioning, which supports improved cognitive performance and emotional regulation.

Backed by more than 30 years of research and further validated through modern brain imaging technologies, neurofeedback is recognized as a safe and effective intervention for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • ADD/ADHD

  • Anxiety

  • Substance use relapse prevention

  • Seizure disorders

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Depression

  • Head injuries

  • General performance enhancement
